Chiropractic Patients Missed Fewer Work Days

Research suggests that chiropractic patients have fewer disability days for back pain compared to patients under conventional care. Despite the efficacy of chiropractic for musculoskeletal conditions, many workers don't see a chiropractor because they're unaware of their insurance coverage or the low costs of chiropractic treatments, according to a new survey from ChiroCare. Many of these same workers also admitted to missing work days or making mistakes on the job due to their chronic pain.

Manual Therapy Effective for Back Pain in Older Adults

In a recent study, researchers sought to compare the effects of two different types of lumbar spinal manual therapy: thrust manipulation (TM) and non-thrust manipulation (NTM), on older adults with low-back pain. Participants were aged 55 to 88 years old. Among research about treating back pain, studies of this kind with subjects in this age range are lacking.

Musculoskeletal Disorders Leading Cause of Worker Disability

Musculoskeletal disorders like back pain and arthritis are the number one cause of worker disability in the US, according to a new report from the Council for Disability Awareness (CDA). Roughly one in three workers (34%) claiming social security benefits for disability suffered from musculoskeletal conditions, along with 30.7% of workers making private insurance claims. Obesity is a Disease, AMA Says

[caption id="attachment_3344" align="alignleft" width="300"] Photo via Creative Commons[/caption] Obesity should be considered a medical disease, according to policymakers from the American Medical Association's House of Delegates, who voted on the new resolution on Tuesday. The delegates say their endorsement recognizing obesity as a disease could spark new treatment options and better insurance reimbursement for overweight individuals seeking to improve their health. Whether or not obesity should be categorized as a disease has sparked a controversy in the medical field, and within the AMA itself. The delegates vote goes against the recommendations from the AMA Council on Science and Public Health, who say that placing obesity in a disease status could undermine efforts for prevention and have little influence on treatment.

BPA Linked to Obesity in Girls

Here's another reason to steer clear of packaged foods and plastic bottles: a new study suggests that BPA could increase the risk of obesity in young girls. The chemical could alter children's metabolism, making it more challenging to lose weight. Researchers publishing in the journal PLoS ONE found that girls between the ages of nine and 12 who had high levels of BPA were twice as likely to be obese as girls with lower BPA levels. Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a chemical commonly found in plastic packaging, plastic bottles, and metal containers.

Straight Back Syndrome: Case Study Shows How Chiropractic Helped

A new case study demonstrates how chiropractic care can ease symptoms of straight back syndrome (SBS). SBS is a deformity characterized by a loss of the normal curvature of the upper back, or thoracic spine. The deformity reduces the diameter of the chest, compressing the heart and great vessels, pushing the hearts towards the left. Patients often present with cardiac murmurs, chest pain, tracheal compression, and mitral valve prolepse.

These symptoms are caused by the decline of more than 10% in forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), caused by exercise, in patients with the condition. Studies have shown that nearly one in ten people suffer from exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.

Despite the Heart Risks, Arthritis Still Being Treated with NSAIDs

Ongoing research has shown that using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) increases the risk of heart attack significantly. Considering this, are doctors using alternative treatments for inflammation whenever possible? A new study has suggested that the answer to that question may be no.
